Freedom to Paint

Freedom to Paint is a weekend long, scheduled interactive painting demonstration led by local artists Marlene Lowden and Vanessa Tomada.

Marlene and Vanessa have a very large canvas to paint during the Rogue Fest weekend and needs your help! They will share some of their mark making ideas with you and you’ll practice the art of letting go of the outcome. Beware we might get messy! All ages welcome.

Marlene Lowden is a contemporary artist that lives and works in her hometown of Gibsons, BC.

Marlene Lowden grew up in an ocean side town on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia, just outside of Vancouver, Canada. After several years in television broadcasting, she resumed her lifelong interest in painting, drawing, and photography. She draws from her experience in television and video production, applying to canvas similar principles of composition and storytelling. While working and raising her two daughters, she studied with a range of instructors learning watercolour, acrylic, and oil painting techniques. She was recently named one of “28 contemporary Canadian artists to know” by Create Magazine and is honoured to be included in the All She Makes curated artist directory and the 4th Edition of their magazine. Her work appears in private and public collections in Canada and internationally.

Vanessa Tomada is a fine art oil painter based on the Sunshine Coast, BC.

“I have always been drawn to fantasy and the natural world. I am endlessly inspired by mythology, animism, animals, the paranormal and occult, ancient civilizations, and the natural world. My favourite art and source of highest inspiration is the Romanticism Art movement and the Academic style. Contemporary wildlife realism is also an influence to me, but nothing quite enraptures my soul or sets my imagination soaring like the works of William-Adolphe Bouguereau or John William Waterhouse, expertly transporting you to Arthurian legends or Roman myths…”
